How to: Lower Your House Water Bill

When planning your new home, bathroom renovation or kitchen renovation, take some time to talk with your builder and plumber on how to weed down your water bill with water conserving bathroom hardware, kitchen hardware and laundry hardware.

Some people don’t think about all the little things that add up.  Like the longer it takes for hot water to come through your taps, the more water you use. And being water conscious doesn’t mean you need to lose out on those massaging showers with new showerheads providing a pleasing flow while also being water efficient.

To save the environment, your time and money be sure to think about:

  • installing a greenhouse efficient hot water system – gas, electric heat pump or solar
  • making sure your hot water system is connected to an off-peak tariff
  • installing AAA shower heads to reduce water and energy use by 50 per cent – you can save up to 15,000 litres of water every year include dual flush cisterns
  • using a tempering valve (note: this is not a thermostatic mixer)
  • installing flow restrictors in older homes where existing taps will be re-used
