TIPS TO SELECTING A FREESTANDING STONE BATH

Thinking of including a freestanding stone bath in your bathroom or ensuite? Here’s some things to consider.

If a stone bath is on your renovation wish list, you’ll already know it’s an investment that shouldn’t be taken lightly (and we’re not just talking about the cost). The ultimate statement in luxury for your bathroom, a stone bath is a design feature that simply has to blend form and function.

1.    Natural stone or stone-composite?

Technically, a bathtub carved from natural stone is considered a ‘stone bath’. Referred to as natural stone baths, these are made from stones like granite, marble and travertine. However, stone-composite baths, which are manufactured from solid surface materials with 60% or more mineral content are also an option. Do your research and compare look, feel and ease of cleaning and maintenance.

2.    Shape, style and colour

A stone bath exudes elegance and are a focal point in the bathroom. Renowned for their organic, smooth lines, the oval shape tends to be the most popular, but square or rectangular tubs provide a modern look. Stone bathtubs come in a wide range of shades from classic white to pale greys, browns, black and off-whites in gloss or matt finishes.

3.    Think about comfort

The ergonomic design of your stone bath is important to ensure you can relax and enjoy the rejuvenating benefits of a bath. Consider the length, height and depth of the bathtub. Can you rest your arms on the lip of the bath? Is your neck comfortably supported?

4.    Installation

Choose a stone bath that suits your bathroom size and layout. What size of bath can your bathroom accommodate? Measure carefully, and check the weight, too. Stone baths can be heavy (up to 300kg), so it’s vital to work with your builder to ensure the floor can support the bath, particularly if you have an upstairs bathroom. You also need a minimum of 100mm around a freestanding bath for cleaning purposes.

HOMES 4 LIVING TIP: Test it out! Don’t be afraid to jump in and sit and stretch out in the bath in the showroom. It’s the only way you’ll know if a stone bath is the right fit for you and meets your comfort criteria.
